Frequently Asked Questions

General Mission:  The mission of the D. M. Davis Male Voice Choir is to  provide quality entertainment and education through the media of music while maintaining a strong bond of fellowship among those who enjoy singing and performing.  To carry on the tradition of music brought to the Ohio valley by our founding fathers and passing this tradition on to future generations.

Organization Name:  D. M. Davis Male Voice Choir .  The chorus is named in honor of the late D. Merrill Davis, long time music educator  and male chorus director in Jackson Ohio.

Organization Officers:  In the tradition of male choruses of the past, the choir will be lead by the Senior Director,  Director/Directors, Pianist, Chorus Master, and Treasurer.  The Senior Director, Director/Directors and Pianist will be in charge of choosing music and planning music to be used at various programs, planning and carrying out regular rehearsals.  The Chorus Master, or Choir Master in this case, will carry out administrative function much as an organization President and be the general contact for performance information and schedules.  The Treasurer will account for the funds of the organization, make deposits and make payments for financial obligations.  In addition, he will keep a basic record of business discussed by the membership and votes taken. All officers of the choir will carry out their duties on an open ended basis with the approval of the membership.

Requirements for Membership:  The only requirements are a love of good music, the willingness to practice on a weekly basis, and a willingness to take direction and cooperate for the good of the group. After the original choir is founded,  the group will strive to maintain itself at a constant number.  All replacements must come from persons recommended by a choir member and approved by the general membership and/or a membership committee.  There is no age restriction.

Rehearsals:  There will be a rehearsal each week on Tuesday evening.  The place will be the Markay Cultural Arts Center in Jackson.  The time will be 7:30 to 9:00 pm.  All members are expected to attend rehearsals regularly.  (It is understood that members must miss rehearsal now and again for some personal or family reason.  It is also understood that student members must from time to time miss rehearsals for a period of time so that they might be part of school or family activities)

Type of Music:  The Choir will be doing a vast variety of music types, from Welsh hymns to comedy numbers, from barbershop to classical.  Music will be chosen by the music director, assistant music director and pianist from numbers recommended by the general membership.  Everyone will have a chance to pick something they enjoy.

Cost:  The Choir has no set fees for membership.  However, the membership may asses itself from time to time should it be needed to cover music, etc.  Each member will be responsible for providing clothing to give the choir a unified look. (shirts alike, for example)  Money from the general funds will be used for these things if and when it is available.

Smaller Groups within the Choir:  It is hoped that there will be at least one small (8-10) member group within the choir.  This gives us the opportunity to take our music to organizations that may meet in places too small for the entire choir.  It is also our hope that one or more quartets might be formed among the membership with their own signature type of music.
